1977 - Discovering the World

This is 'Rusty' - the VW Van in which we travelled from Canada to Paraguay. In November 1977 we left Canada and drove south - stopping first in Mazatlan Mexico.

You'll notice an area at the top-rear of the van which is where Brent & Duane slept. There was a Kangaroo painted on one of the front doors and a Beaver on the other to represent from Canada to Australia. This was our home for almost a year.

Beach vendors sold us these puppets. Now they are very tangled.

This is the 'Pyramid of the Sun' in Mexico. The steps are about 40-50 cm high - so Brent wasn't very keen on climbing as his legs were short (see him at the bottom left?). However half way up the pyramid an ice-cream vendor was selling his wares and when Brent saw we were buying one, he raced up the stairs as if he had the longest legs in the world! This probably taught him he could climb anything!

People in Guatemala were very friendly and crowded around to see what we were like just as we were curious about them.

Brent had little fear of heights. Duane refused to go sit on the ledge - but Brent was quite happy dangling his feet over a 400 metre drop!
